Nigerian Delegation visits Gamaneguma

A delegation of the Third National Fadama Development Project (Fadama III) of Nigeria recently visited Gamaneguma Second Community Development and Livelihood Improvement Project to study the successful operation of the Community Driven Development model.

The 22 member delegation led by the Task Team Leader of the project Dr.Adimbola Aduvi included facilitators, coordinators and the beneficiary farmers of the project.

Fadama III Project and Gamaneguma projects have similarities. The Fadama III project mainly targets rural farmers and the objectives are sustainable increase of incomes of Fadama users, reduce rural poverty, increase food security and contribute to the achievement of a key millennium development goal.

Fadama project is also directly delivering resources to the beneficiary rural communities, efficiently and effectively, and empowering them to collectively decide on how resources are allocated and managed for their livelihood activities and to participate in the design and execution of their sub projects. This is similar to the community driven development model implemented in the Gamaneguma Second Community Development and Livelihood Improvement Project.

The delegation visited five Gamaneguma villages and Saru Community Radio in the Polonnaruwa district, an inter village connectivity infrastructure project and secondary institutions set up in Gamaneguma for the sustainability of the project such as National Community Professional Learning and Training Center (NCPLTC), district CPLTC and the District Federation in the Ratnapura district.

Concluding the four day visit Dr.Adimbola Aduvi said that Gamaneguma has unique features and they learnt a lot of lessons and new experiences. "We mainly focused on the mechanism you have in Gamaneguma for long term sustainability of the project. Objectives and some features of the two projects are similar as we attempt to increase income of the beneficiaries and reduce rural poverty, he said. We had a totally different experience here and the hospitality of the community of Gamaneguma villages, facilitators and the staff of Gamaneguma is great, Dr. Aduvi said.

Fadama III is also a World Bank funded project and the study tour was coordinated by the World Bank.
